The legendary Teatro alla Scala (Milan) will present G. Verdi’s opera Falstaff to Astana residents and guests as part of the EXPO-2017 International Specialized Exhibition (4 performances: 1, 4, 6, 8 September 2017).
The Teatro alla Scala is an opera house in Milan, founded in 1778. The theatre was destroyed during the Second World War. Engineer L.Secchi restored it, and the theatre was reopened in 1946.
Falstaff was the last opera in G. Verdi’s creative activity. The renowned composer was more than 80 years old when he decided to write a comic work.
The multifaceted image of the old Don Juan, Falstaff, is created on the basis of Shakespeare’s two dramatic works: the widely known The Merry Wives of Windsor and comedy interludes from the chronicle-history play Henry IV. Arrigo Boito wrote the libretto. To create Falstaff’s musical characteristics, the composer used techniques and means, which he had been honing for many years while working on the opera genre. Falstaff is just as brilliant an embodiment created by Shakespeare in comic opera, as Othello in musical drama. Verdi’s last creation magnificently completes the development of the Italian opera buffa, begun by Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia.
Falstaff, which was first performed on 9 February 1893 at La Scala, was a triumphant success.
One of the most famous and charismatic musicians of our planet, Zubin Mehta, will conduct the Teatro alla Scala Symphony Orchestra during the performance at the Astana Opera House.
One of the most renowned conductors of our time. He headed the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and was Music Director of the Los Angeles and New York Philharmonic Orchestras. In 1969, he was invited as a music consultant to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 1977, he was appointed its Music Director. In 1981, he was made Music Director for Life of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Parallel to that, he headed the Bavarian State Opera (1998-2006).
He is a widely recognized master of large and deep symphonic canvases, such as the symphonies by Bruckner, Mahler, Richard Strauss, as well as conductor of the most famous concerts in the history of music, such as The Three Tenors – Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti – in 1990 in Rome.
Zubin Mehta can rehearse for 18 hours a day. The 80-year-old maestro knows by heart more than a hundred scores, therefore he conducts without notes. Whether it is Tchaikovsky's concert, Mahler's symphony or Bizet's opera – should Zubin Mehta stand behind the conductor's console, a performance will be a resounding success.
